Description
A beautiful deadstock fabric from Paul Smith, woven in a rich dark indigo navy that is reminiscent of classic denim. The colour is extremely deep and was difficult to capture accurately in photographs, with the image of the fabric on the bolt offering the closest representation of its true shade. The fabric is yarn dyed, adding depth and subtle variation to the colour as the light moves across the surface.
This fabric is a viscose and cotton blend, although the exact composition is unknown due to its deadstock origin. It has the reassuring structure and stability of cotton, combined with a lovely softness that makes it particularly pleasant to wear and sew. Whilst it isn’t drapey, it has enough give to feel comfortable and soft against the skin, while still holding gentle shape and volume.
Woven as a jacquard, the abstract floral design is created within the fabric itself rather than being printed onto the surface. The weave gives the cloth a subtle texture and depth, allowing the pattern to emerge as the light catches it. It also contributes to the fabric’s lovely balance of softness and structure, giving it a little more body than you might expect from a fabric of this type.
It presses exceptionally well, making it an excellent choice for garments that feature details such as collars, cuffs, facings and pleats. The combination of structure and softness lends itself to shirts, blouses, tops, skirts, lightweight trousers and dresses.
Originally produced for Paul Smith and most likely intended for shirting, this is a versatile, high-quality fabric with all the character that makes deadstock fabrics so special. Thoughtful details, beautiful texture and a pleasure to sew.
