Description

This is an absolutely superb ex-designer deadstock cotton, sourced from a renowned Nottinghamshire British fashion house synonymous with exceptional quality and particularly famous for its beautifully made shirts. I’m not permitted to name the designer, but the quality of this fabric gives a rather good clue as to the calibre of its origins!

Made from 100% cotton, this is a beautiful shirting-weight fabric, similar in weight to a cotton poplin but with a noticeably more luxurious quality. It feels exceptionally smooth and soft, with that gorgeous quality you often find in high-end designer cottons. It’s lightweight and breathable, while still having enough body to hold a little shape and volume – perfect for gathers, tiers, puff sleeves and more structured details such as collars, cuffs and button plackets.

The relatively small check is made up of a gorgeous combination of deep bottle green, rich indigo-purple, caramel and fine ivory stripes. There’s something quite classic and distinctly British about the colours – they actually remind me a little of Wimbledon – but the scale and arrangement of the check give it a really interesting, contemporary feel.

Yes, it would make an exceptional shirt, but I really wouldn’t stop there. I can see this made into a jumpsuit, wide-leg trousers, shorts, blouses, tops, skirts, dresses and co-ord sets. A pair of shorts with a simple cropped top would look fabulous, and it has just enough body for those lovely gathered or tiered silhouettes too.

I particularly love the idea of a tiered dress in this fabric. Wear it with sandals through Spring and Summer, then add chunky knitwear, tights and boots as the weather cools. Those rich greens, purples and caramel tones work beautifully across the seasons, making this a genuinely versatile fabric for your handmade wardrobe.
