Some fabrics have a real sense of occasion, and this is definitely one of them.
With its rich jewel tones and subtle lustre, this fabric has a wonderful resemblance to shot silk taffeta, although it isn’t actually silk. The claret wine, bottle green and deep purple threads catch the light beautifully, creating a fabric that changes subtly as it moves. It’s one of those fabrics that really needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated, and because of the way the colours shift, it was surprisingly difficult to photograph accurately. I’ve done my very best to capture it, but I’ll also be sharing a video on Instagram to help show the colours more accurately.
Woven into a timeless tartan check and finished with a gentle crinkle texture, this fabric has a lovely soft handle with enough body to hold its shape beautifully. It’s ideal for gathered skirts, statement sleeves, ruffles and other details where you want a little structure, while its gentle drape and subtle movement stop it from feeling stiff or heavy.
Although it would make the most beautiful occasion wear, it certainly isn’t reserved just for special events. I can picture it sewn into a stunning dress for Christmas celebrations, winter weddings, festive parties and evenings at the theatre, just as easily as I can imagine it made into an elegant blouse, a full skirt or a beautifully tailored dress with softly gathered sleeves. It’s one of those fabrics that works beautifully all year round. Wear it as a simple Summer dress with sandals, then style it with tights, boots, knitwear and a tailored jacket once the cooler months arrive for a completely different look.
