Are you looking to learn how to sew and are a complete beginner? Perhaps you learnt to sew in the past but are rusty and have lost all your confidence? If so, “Learn How To Use A Sewing Machine” is the course for you!
Designed for complete beginners, this course will see you learn the basics of using a sewing machine. You will…
- Learn all about the various parts of a Sewing Machine and their functions
- How to change a needle
- How to wind a bobbin
- How to thread the machine
- Learn the basic stitches and their uses, including straight stitch, zig zag etc
- Learn about the various sewing machine feet, their uses and how to change them
- Learn how to guide fabric through the machine, sewing in straight lines and around corners.
- Practice using the machine. You will produce sample pieces to take home
The class is led by Anne Acosta. Anne has worked in TV and theatre as a costume maker and spent much of her career as a fashion/textiles Technical Tutor at Loughborough University. Anne is a calm, warm and patient teacher with a wealth of knowledge and will expertly guide you throughout the class.
What do I need to bring?
We recommend that you bring a notebook. It’s handy to make notes on various aspects of the class that you can refer to once you’re in the comfort of your own home.
You may also wish to bring a water bottle and that is all (apart from yourself)!
The sewing studio has Janome 5060QDC sewing machines, over lockers, ironing board and iron. Calico and thread will be provided for you to practice on.
There will be 5 to 6 people in each class so that each person can get the attention they require.
The session is 2 hours long. We believe this to be ideal for learning - long enough to begin to learn a new skill without being overwhelmed!
The studio is located within The Fabric Boutique at 5 Rushtons Yard, Ashby de la Zouch, so should you choose to purchase any haberdashery, fabric, notions etc, you can easily pop into the shop. Please be advised that the studio is up a flight of stairs. Parking is available next to The Fabric Boutique in Rushtons Yard Carpark. Please be advised there is a maximum of 3 hours parking and there is a charge. There is a long stay carpark a short walk from the shop on South Street - also subject to charges.
Pre booking is essential as places are limited. You can book via the website or please call into the shop. We’re afraid places can’t be reserved without payment.
Terms and conditions
Please note that by reserving a place on a class or workshop, you will be agreeing to the following terms and conditions.
- Places are reserved once payment has been made
- Payment is required in full at the time of booking
- The Fabric Boutique gift cards are redeemable, with payment in part or full for classes/workshops
- Bookings will be subject to the cancellation policy
- Classes will only run if there are sufficient numbers. A minimum of 3 places must be booked in order for the class to take place
- Classes are for individuals aged 18 and over
Cancellation and Refund Policy
- Should unforeseen circumstances arise or if minimum numbers of three have not been reached, The Fabric Boutique may need to cancel the class. In such circumstances, a full refund will be given
Should you require to cancel for any reason the following applies
We know that life can be unpredictable, and sometimes plans change. To help us keep classes running smoothly and fairly for everyone, the following policy applies:

• Cancellations made more than 14 days before the class - full refunds are available. Alternatively, you may transfer your booking to another class date, subject to availability.
• Cancellations made within 14 days of the class - Unfortunately, we are unable to offer refunds for cancellations within two weeks of the class.
If there is enough time and availability, we will do our very best as a goodwill gesture to move your booking to another class. Please understand that this is not guaranteed, as spaces are limited and late notice more often than not, means we cannot fill your place.
• Refunds and credits
Eligible refunds will be processed immediately, and should appear in your account within 7 days. Credit notes for class transfers, if possible, will also be issued promptly.
We really appreciate your understanding. Late cancellations make it difficult to fill your spot and cover the costs of running our classes. By planning ahead and letting us know as early as possible if your plans change, you help us ensure a smooth experience for all participants.
