Description
This beautiful ex-Paul Smith deadstock fabric is woven in a contemporary yarn-dyed check in the warmest palette of blush pinks, rich wine tones, soft apricot and peach, all balanced with a gentle charcoal check. Because the coloured yarns are woven together, the charcoal doesn’t appear harsh or solid. Instead, it has a softer, broken appearance that gives the fabric wonderful depth while allowing the lighter shades to shine through.
The fabric has the softest brushed finish. It isn’t fluffy or heavy—just beautifully smooth with the gentlest surface texture, making it incredibly soft to handle. Woven throughout the checks is an incredibly fine Lurex thread that catches the light with the gentlest shimmer. It’s by no means bold or sparkly; it simply adds a little something extra without ever taking over the fabric.
Although the exact fibre composition is unknown, this deadstock fabric is predominantly cotton, with just a very fine Lurex thread woven through the check to create its subtle shimmer. The Lurex makes up only a tiny part of the fabric, so it still has all the lovely characteristics you would expect from a fine cotton woven.
Because the fabric is so fine, it has lovely fluid movement and a gentle drape, while still retaining enough body to press neatly into collars, cuffs, button plackets and soft pleats. It also gathers beautifully, making it ideal for soft ruffles and fuller styles.
This fabric would make gorgeous shirts, blouses, dresses, skirts, wide-leg trousers and lightweight pyjamas. I’ve also seen some fabulous asymmetrical tops made in fabrics like this recently, where the checked design really comes into its own. The gentle drape gives garments beautiful movement, while the predominantly cotton composition means they’re comfortable to wear, breathable and a pleasure to sew.
